Weekly Grocery Challenge Starting September 4, 2011
So many of you have contacted me these last few months to ask that I restart the $15 a week grocery challenge. I must admit, I loved this challenge because it required me to keep coming up with creative ways to feed my family on a tiny budget but maintaining nutrition.
Since we're nearing back to school I thought it would be good to start this again at the start of next month. For those of you new to Recession Lessons, the $15 a week grocery challenge allowed you only $15/week per person to feed each person in your family. So if you have 4 people in your family that's a $60 grocery budget, if 5 people, $75... and so on. This includes breakfast. lunch and dinner.
For my family of 5 our budget is $75. A very doable amount. It doesn't seem like a lot but with coupons, sales and all, it is very doable and it makes you realize just how much you can save by using coupons and sales to your advantage. So saddle up. You have a few weeks to get prepared.

4 Ways To Get Your Family & Friends To Stop Asking for Money
This week I've had several people contact me to share stories about friends and families requesting personal loans. The truth is despite what we've seen with the recent adding of jobs in the economy, many people are still losing their jobs and some are still hurting financially. So if you have the money to spare and you want to lend money to those you trust, you should do so especially if it's a close family member in need. However, this is a time to also mind your money no matter how much you have and who is asking, especially those relatives and friends who always seem to be in "need".
When it comes to loaning money to anyone, friends and family included, you have to be careful because lending money is the quickest way to destroy any relationship. When asked to borrow money, I always take a lesson from the banks. Here are 4 tips that banks utilize when considering whether to lend money that you would be wise to also heed:
1. Ask for Collateral. If your family or friends don't have collateral, don't loan it out because chances are very slim that they have the ability to pay you back. Unless you have some collateral, you should consider any money not paid back a gift because the chances of getting it back are slim to none. Note that collateral doesn't always have to be something of financial value but can also be of sentimental value. The key is to obtain something of value to the person borrowing that will make them want to repay you.
2. Ask for Interest. The minute I say interest is usually the last I hear from anyone wanting to borrow money. One thing I've learned over the years, is people don't like to pay interest to friends or relatives. For them, this is often the reason they come to you vs. a bank or a pay day company. But the truth is, you're entitled to interest because you're taking a risk on loaning to them and money loaned to them can't collect interest for you.
3. Require they fill out an application. If this sounds like a lot to ask someone to do, just think about why the banks do it. They want to know what you need it for, how much you want and your ability to pay it back. When you think about it, seems like a sensible thing to do and a much smarter approach to loaning money rather than doing it out of a sense of obligation or because of blood ties or friendship.
4. Ask for references. This is self explanatory. If they can't provide someone who can't vouch for their creditworthiness, I'm not sure you should loan to them. If they can't offer any references, ask to see an example of when they've paid off a debt to a bank or other institution. The key here is for them to show you a history of paying money back. Although you should keep in mind that a past indicator of success is not a future indicator of success especially when money and friends and family are involved.

If they can't offer any references, ask to see an example of when they've paid off a debt to a bank or other institution. The key here is for them to show you a history of paying money back. Although you should keep in mind that a past indicator of success is not a future indicator of success especially when money and friends and family are involved.
I know it seems like a lot to go through when loaning money, but when it comes to loaning money, the more work you do upfront, the less headache you will have on the back end especially since I find that once you do these things the requests for money usually dissipate.
